Having seen the Fernando Torres incident — my thoughts go out to him.
Having seen the way he landed, I think he was unconscious from the original blow. The second bang couldn’t have helped him though. By the looks of the video, he doesn’t know the players is there so he can’t brace himself.
The reports coming out of Spain suggest he is improving his situation.
This incident and the reports of Mario Gotze’s muscle weakening disease serve to show us that footballers are still human. They can get ill and can get badly hurt. Some of the vitriol aimed at players as though they are some how immune to feeling hurt is unbelievable.
There are somethings I believe a player should never do, such as refuse to play, as it sticks two fingers up at the fans who pay their wages.
But there’s other things that go just to far. Such as Arsenal fans telling Adebayor that he “should’ve got shot in Angola”.
Footballers are still human. Which is why I wish both Torres and Gotze a good and quick recovery.
Janusz Korwin-Mikke, a nationalist Polish MEP is in a lot of hot water, commenting to the European Parliament that women “must earn less than men because they are weaker, smaller and less intelligent”. He was quite rightly put down by fellow MEP, Iratxe Garcia-Perez. You might remember him, as in 2015 he was banned from the Parliament for a while for doing a Nazi salute.
These comments are just stupid. I’m not sure why he even thought it was a good idea. There is no reason why someone should be paid less than someone else for the same job. None at all. And Garcia-Perez responded perfectly to use words to dis-credit him.
I don’t think he should be banned from the European Parliament. Let him spout his misogynist nonsense and then use rational arguments to show everyone just why it’s nonsense.
If Korwin-Mikke is not returned in the next European elections in 2019, however, the chamber is likely to be a better place.
Also, by the way, hearing a put down in Spanish sounds so cool.
Today marks 142 years since the first indoor Ice Hockey game. The game took place in Montreal. Ice hockey is a great sport, because it’s very fast and entertaining, but it requires a fair bit of skill. It is fun to play though. I keep in eye on the results of the Edmonton Oilers, having visited relatives in the Canadian city before. Ice hockey uses a puck as balls are too slick to control, but luckily in the sport, the game is contained and thus, there’s no offs. I also like the Oji Eagles in Asia League Hockey. If you’d like to see hockey mentioned more in my blog, let me know in the comments.
